Issues related to Harmonised System (HS) code seem to be becoming a major issue amidst allegations by the importers of facing harassment at the Chittagong Customs House over HS Codes.
This is as per media reports, which underlined businesses have reportedly maintained the biggest obstacle in the import-export trade currently is the complications related to HS codes even as they reportedly alleged it was primarily the revenue officers at the customs house who create such complications, as a result of which, large number of containers remain stuck at Chittagong Port, they maintained.
It may be mentioned here businesses (including importers and apparel makers) who frequently face harassment at the hands of customs officials have held several meetings with customs commissioners and informed the country’s National Board of Revenue (NBR) about the HS Codes related issue — HS Code is a common standard used worldwide for classifying traded goods into approximately 5,000 commodity groups — even if BGMEA President Faruque Hassan has on 30th October sent a letter to Chittagong Customs House Commissioner seeking early resolution of the problem.
