The ongoing workers’ protest in many parts of the country in demand of salary disbursement, took a violent turn in Gazipur on Monday after police had to use force to control the agitating workers.
In the ensuing confrontation, at least eight people including a police official sustained injury.
The problem started on Monday morning when a group of workers of Stylish Garments Limited in Bhogra assembled before the factory demanding it be opened. Further they also called for immediate disbursal of pending wages (of February and March) of at least 30 workers and 48 other staff of the concerned organisation.
The situation turned complicated when workers from the nearby factories joined their agitating counterparts from Stylish Garment and laid siege on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway.
Subsequently, the agitating workers turned violent and set three motorcycles and eight bicycles on fire. They also resorted to brick-batting the factory premises, which compelled police to intervene and diffuse the situation.
The law enforcers reportedly fired at least 25 rubber bullets to disperse the protesting workers, and in the ensuing skirmishes at least eight people sustained injury.
Meanwhile, reports of workers’ protest are also coming in from various other parts including Narayanganj, Savar and Chittagong.
