To make a difference to animals and the planet, Ocean Project, the US-based fashion company, pulls 2.2 pounds of plastic trash from oceans, rivers and waterways on selling one T-shirt or accessory.
Ocean Project is a company with a vision to make a difference to our ocean’s ecosystems. Customer’s every purchase through the company includes a donation to cleaning plastic from the oceans and helps save endangered animals.
To date, Ocean Project has donated more than US $ 41,000 to clean up projects.
“As consumers, we want our purchases to make a difference to animals and the planet. Ocean Project has made it a central part of its mission to approach fashion in an ethical and open way. We want people to look and feel good in what they’re wearing and know that the money they spend on their clothes helps clean the environment,” said Lisa Anderson, Co-founder of Ocean Project.
It is pertinent to mention here that according to the Center for Biological Diversity, thousands of seabirds and sea turtles, seals and other marine mammals are killed each year after ingesting plastic or getting entangled in it.
Endangered wildlife like Hawaiian monk seals and Pacific loggerhead sea turtles are amongst the nearly 700 species that eat and get caught in plastic litter.
“There are many pollution problems in the fashion industry, like colouring fabrics using toxic dyes, or tanning leather using toxic chemicals. By some estimates, the fashion industry is the second most polluting industry in the world, right after the petroleum sector,” Lisa added.
