
As garment factories in Bangladesh resumed operations from 1 August following the Government’s move to keep all-export oriented industries, including the apparel factories, out of the purview of the 14-day COVID-19 lockdown, around 90 per cent of garment workers have reported back to work as of 1 August.
Media reports maintained this, citing factory owners even as according to labour leaders, more than 80 per cent of the garment workers have, reportedly, come back to their respective workplaces.
Speaking to the media, Vice-President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), reportedly, maintained that around 90 per cent of the workers were present at the factories on Sunday, adding most of them stay near their respective factories while as per Director of the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) Fazle Ehsan Shamim, 85-90 per cent of the workers have joined work, as of Sunday.
Meanwhile, President of Bangladesh Apparel Workers Federation Towhidur Rahman, on his part, reportedly, underlined more than 80 per cent garment workers have joined work on 1 August.
