Uber has collaborated with the Australian Red Cross to facilitate a convenient and cost-free pre-loved clothing collection drive set to take place on Saturday, 21st October. This initiative allows Australians to donate up to 20 kilograms of unwanted clothing to the Australian Red Cross through a pre-scheduled Uber delivery. Anticipated to amass over 60,000 kilograms of pre-loved garments, the initiative is set to occur in major cities across the country, including Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney. The 2023 Clothing Drive follows a similar effort launched in 2022, resulting in a donation of 42,000 kilograms of pre-loved clothing.
The collaboration is in response to the findings of a recent ‘Cost of Giving’ report commissioned by Uber and the Australian Red Cross. The report disclosed that Australians possess an estimated US $ 18.5 billion worth of clothing that could potentially be donated to charitable causes. The report further delineated the distribution of unused clothing across generations, with Gen Z individuals holding an average of US $ 681 worth, followed by Millennials at US $ 1,171, Gen X at US $ 1,083, and Boomers at US $ 809. Despite 64 per cent of Australians indicating they ‘spring clean’ their wardrobes annually, 82 per cent of those who do donate leave their unwanted clothing in donation bags for up to three months. Shockingly, 12 per cent of respondents admitted to never having donated clothing to charity.
Richard Wood, the head of retail at the Australian Red Cross, emphasized the diverse avenues available for supporting those in need, encouraging contributions through quality clothing donations, shopping at Australian Red Cross stores, or volunteering. Wood highlighted the critical role these initiatives play in uniting people and communities, especially during challenging times.
Dom Taylor, Uber ANZ general manager, stressed the importance of aiding vulnerable communities in the face of frequent natural disasters. Taylor emphasised that Australians can make a substantial impact on these communities without having to make monetary donations. The Uber and Australian Red Cross Clothing Drive streamlines the process of donating pre-loved clothing, offering free pickups directly from individuals’ doorsteps to Australian Red Cross sorting centers on the designated day, ensuring support for vulnerable communities beyond just financial contributions.
