In an open letter to the fashion and textile industry, twenty members of the International Consumer Protection and Enforcement Network (ICPEN), a membership organisation consisting of consumer protection law enforcement authorities from across the globe, stress the significance of adhering to consumer protection laws when making environmental claims.
By offering universal guidelines that apply to environmental claims, the letter pushes companies to improve compliance standards. Although national laws may differ, this letter stresses that enterprises in many different nations are subject to the same fundamental principles.
The following are among the members’ values for the sector:
- Making sure that statements are accurate, truthful, and transparent
- Making assertions only when there is adequate evidence to support them.
- Steer clear of generic, ambiguous promises like “sustainable,” “green,” or “eco-friendly.”
- Steer clear of unsupported assertions regarding future goals and concentrate on particular actions that have been or are being taken to achieve them.
Certain member countries may have more stringent or specialised regulations in place, and this letter does not imply that any one ICPEN member will give enforcement action against false environmental claims top priority.
