A traffic standstill ensued on the Dhaka-Tangail highway for over an hour on Saturday (13th January) morning as readymade garment workers in Gazipur’s Konabari area staged a demonstration, demanding adherence to Government-set wages and an eight-hour workday.
This is as per media reports, as per which the protest, which began around 8:00 am, resulted in a lengthy tailback on both sides of the highway.
Mohammad Ziaul Islam, the officer-in-charge of Konabari Police Station, reported that workers from garment factories in the Konabari vicinity rallied for their six-point demands, which included the implementation of Government-mandated wages and an eight-hour workday.
Following assurances from the police regarding their concerns, the demonstrating workers were later dispersed from the highway. Consequently, vehicular movement gradually returned to normal on both sides of the Dhaka-Tangail highway, reports claimed.
