The Government of India has set target of bringing 2,900 apparel units under DISHA – (Driving Industry Towards Sustainable Human Capital Advancement) in the 12th Five Year Plan. Disha, a programme aimed at encouraging better social practices to meet global standards on issues like child labour, was initiated more than a year ago and is slowly gaining popularity among garment manufacturers.
“We have fixed a target for the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-17) as social compliance has become an important requirement while supplying to the western markets and it is important to bring the smaller and medium level manufacturers into the compliance net,” said V Srinivas, Joint Secretary in Textiles Ministry at a recently held AEPC Stakeholder Forum.
