Workers of GK Garments staged a protest by blocking the Dhaka-Aricha highway at Birulia in Savar on Tuesday, demanding overdue wages. The demonstration began around 10:30 am, causing a halt in vehicular movement and resulting in long tailbacks on both sides of the road.
According to witnesses, the blockade was initiated by workers seeking their pending salaries. The situation prompted a rapid response from joint forces, including members of the Bangladesh Army, who arrived at the scene and urged the workers to disperse. By approximately 11 am, traffic was restored following assurances from the authorities.
Factory representatives explained that the delay in salary payments was due to various complications, and the factory had initially scheduled to disburse April wages on Tuesday. However, the payment was postponed, with a new date set for May 18. Rafiqul Islam Sujan, president of the Bangladesh Garments and Industries Workers Federation, called on the authorities to expedite the payment process to prevent further disruptions.
