During the Green Economy Expo at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) on 3rd July 2024, the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) Indonesia, the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas), Bandung Polytechnic of Textile Technology (Politeknik STTT Bandung), and PT Daur Langkah Bersama (Pable) signed a joint agreement aimed at nurturing sustainability in Indonesia’s textile industry.
According to a statement from the Jakarta Convention Center, the collaboration focuses on sponsoring a circular economy approach inside Indonesia’s textile sector, lining up with Bappenas’ priorities and objectives. In 2023, the textile industry engaged 3.98 million people and added 5.84 per cent to Indonesia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the first quarter of 2024.
The Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has pledged to supporting GGGI Indonesia in its partnership with major government institutions and sustainability initiatives such as Pable, a company focusing in textile-to-textile recycling. Through GGGI Indonesia’s Green Transition Investment Program (GTIP), the collaboration aims to lessen the environmental impact of textile waste, endorse circular textile solutions, generate green jobs, and execute training programmes.
Bappenas lately released Indonesia’s Circular Economy Roadmap and National Action Plan, highlighting textile waste management as a priority sector. Priyanto Rohmattullah, Director of Environment at Bappenas, underlined the pressing need to deal with Indonesia’s projected 2.3 million tons of annual textile waste, estimated to increase by 70 per cent without interference. The coloration aims not only to handle textile waste but also to grow a circular textile ecosystem, comprising financial schemes and capacity building for industry stakeholders.
The partnership involves Bandung Polytechnic of Textile Technology to improve technical and vocational education and training (TVET) programs, nurturing expertise in textile recycling techniques and growing employment opportunities.
Yorkie Sutaryo, GGGI Indonesia’s GTIP Indonesia Lead, highlighted the program’s long-term goal of sustaining local businesses in accessing markets with strict sustainability standards.
Essential to GTIP’s efforts is Pable, which focuses in pioneering textile-to-textile recycling methods. Aryenda Atma, Founder and CEO of Pable, shared optimism about growing sustainable practices inside Indonesia’s textile recycling sector, leveraging the partnership to access latest markets and improve socio-economic benefits.
The partnership under GTIP will allow Pable to profit from technology transfer assisted by the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, further promoting its capabilities in converting textile waste into recycled products for both domestic and global markets.
