Óscar García Maceiras, the CEO of Inditex, was declared as the next successor to previous co-chair, Helena Helmersson at Fashion Pact, an association founded in 2019 by Kering’s CEO François-Henri Pinault and French President Emmanuel Macron through the G7 meeting in Biarritz, France. The pact, which comprises about 60 members from different sectors of the fashion industry, aims to deal with concerns about the environmental impact of fashion by setting extensive guidelines for development by 2050. Members comprise Adidas, Puma, Nike, H&M, and luxury brands like Armani and Prada.
Fashion Pact’s task is to encourage collaboration among industry players to deal with environmental issues like climate change, biodiversity preservation, and ocean preservation. Nevertheless, critics argue that the commitments made by Fashion Pact are short of specificity and enforceability.
García Maceiras, in his current LinkedIn post, highlighted Inditex’s pledge to a sustainable fashion industry and promised to push innovation towards circular fashion and diminishing environmental impact. His selection brings notice to the challenges faced by Fashion Pact, besides co-chairman Paul Polman and executive director Eva von Alvensleben, in achieving their ambitious goals.
