The OEKO-TEX® MADE IN GREEN label is celebrating its 10th year in the textile industry, with the milestone showing how the sustainability landscape in the textile industry is shifting and how the MADE IN GREEN label has become a standard in the industry for brands and consumers.
For consumers, the label provides a traceable product ID and QR code that unlocks the entire production journey, from material sourcing to factory conditions.
By providing verified eco-friendly practices and safer, more sustainable materials, MADE IN GREEN is assisting brands in rising to the expectations of consumers. Adoption was dominated by Germany and major Asian production hubs, including Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, and China, with 16,927 labels issued in 39 countries in 2024 alone. The US and UK are also seeing an increase in interest. Home textiles (bedding, towels), clothing (T-shirts, sweatshirts, workwear, pants), and speciality items like yoga and play mats for kids are examples of commonly labelled items.
MADE IN GREEN guarantees adherence to labour laws, including those pertaining to workplace safety, freedom of association, and the proscription of child and forced labour. In 2024, over two million textile workers had security thanks to MADE IN GREEN-recognized supplier networks.
The MADE IN GREEN label is supported by rigorous standards, and its increasing international acclaim conveys a trustworthy message that customers can support. The MADE IN GREEN label is assisting in bridging the gap between firms’ requirement for genuine sustainability and customers’ desire for transparency.
The MADE IN GREEN label was created in April 2015 in response to the collapse of the Rana Plaza textile factory in Bangladesh, with the intention of setting new transparency standards. It conveys confirmed safety, sustainability, and social responsibility in a single, traceable product label by combining several certifications into one consumer-facing label.
A number of independent organisations have recognised OEKO-TEX® MADE IN GREEN due to its credibility. The label is available on the ITC Standards Map and the Siegelklarheit platform, and it is approved by Amazon’s Climate Pledge Friendly program. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognised MADE IN GREEN for meeting stringent requirements for apparel and textiles. The Refashion Bonus for Eco Modulation is available to French companies that offer products certified by OEKO-TEX® MADE IN GREEN.
