In a step towards enhancing socio-economic progress, the unveiling of a large-scale garment production facility in Savelugu, Northern Ghana has been declared, with a commitment to generating more than 1,600 employment opportunities for women and youth in the area. This endeavor, a collaborative venture involving Northshore Apparel Ghana Ltd, the German government facilitated by its donor agency Facility Investment for Employment (IFE), and the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) in Ghana, not only aims to create jobs but also to catalyze industrial advancement and address developmental disparities within the nation.
The partnership signifies a joint dedication to fostering economic growth and societal advancement in Ghana, particularly in regions that have been slower to industrialise. With a total project investment of 10.1 million EUR, the initiative is poised to enhance the competitiveness of Northern Ghana, heralding a new phase of job generation, particularly targeting the youth and marginalised groups such as persons with disabilities. As stated by Steffen Kuhl, Managing Director of IFE, the project places a special focus on inclusivity by reserving positions for graduates from the Savelugu School for the Deaf and aims to reduce internal migration by offering sustainable job prospects within the region.
Spanning an area of over 13,000 square meters, the facility is designed to change the textile industry landscape in Ghana, equipped with infrastructure for sewing, cutting, design, and raw material storage. Mohammed Nurideen, the founder of Northshore Apparel Ghana Ltd, lauded the project’s potential to contribute to the economic progress of Northern Ghana, expressing appreciation for the backing received from the German government, ADB, and other stakeholders.
