A lawsuit has been filed by the police against 11,000 unidentified garment workers for their involvement in vandalism and clashes with law enforcement in Gazipur’s Konabari area.
In one of the cases, a Gazipur court has remanded 11 individuals, who were apprehended by the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and police recently.
The case was filed by Abu Sayed, sub-inspector of Gazipur Metropolitan’s Konabari Police Station, against 12 workers, including those arrested, and 3,000-4,000 others whose identities are unknown.
According to Sayed, the workers allegedly ransacked the Tusuka factory in Konabari, demanding a wage increase.
Incidents of vandalism, including the damage of a car belonging to a deputy commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police, occurred in front of the factory.
The arrested individuals work in various factories, and efforts are underway to apprehend others involved, as stated by Sayed.
According to workers, the protest began on the premises of Tusuka Garments around 3:00 pm on Thursday.
Allegedly, the factory management called in the police, who, in turn, reportedly assaulted several workers. Witnesses claim that protesters threw bricks at the police and the factory. Law enforcement responded by using tear gas, sound grenades, and firearms to disperse the workers.
