Maternova, a women’s health company, has created a line of mosquito protective apparel in response to the Zika outbreak by weaving mosquito-repellent nanotechnology into every day and maternity clothing.
The company relied on a patented nanotechnology to embed scentless mosquito-repellent into the textile. It’s a patented technology. The repellent is EPA-approved and permethrin-free. “It’s very different from current approaches so even if you sprayed your clothing or went through the process of microencapsulating, this embeds longer with no odour and sticks around with more washings. It also helps with warding off mosquitoes that carry malaria or Dengue virus,” said Meg Wirth, Co-Founder and CEO, Maternova.

The technology is embedded into a total of 40 products that include hoodies, leggings, dress and scarves for versatile wear. The apparel can withstand 50+ washings without losing its repellent properties.
Based in USA, Maternova works on creating products that promote women’s health. It won a US $ 25,000 grant from Grand Challenges Canada. GCC is funded by the Federal Government and its grant programme helps pay for research in developing ways to treat diseases in the developing world.
