British department store Marks & Spencer has launched a new range of knickers designed for people with stomas, as part of its ongoing efforts to offer more inclusive and accessible lingerie options.
Marks & Spencer is the first UK high street retailer to introduce such products, a decision inspired by the personal experiences of Jiggy Sohi, a Clothing and Home employee at the company’s London support centre, along with input from other colleagues.
In a press release, Sohi shared her experience using a stoma—a medical device that collects bodily waste when the large intestine is absent—and noted “a real gap in the market” for underwear that caters to those living with a stoma.
“Being part of the M&S family, I saw an opportunity to create something that would empower women to feel more confident, beautiful, and included,” Sohi said. “I’m thrilled that M&S is now the first high street retailer to launch stoma knickers.”
The new range of cotton stoma knickers, available online and in select stores, features an elasticated internal pocket to securely hold the stoma bag in place throughout the day and night.
This product aims to serve the more than 200,000 people in the UK who live with a stoma. Marks & Spencer collaborated with Colostomy UK to develop the design.
This initiative builds on the retailer’s existing range of accessible products, including its post-surgery bra line and easy-dressing range for children with sensory or physical disabilities.
