The Yard Atelier space has launched in Manchester for start-up fashion businesses and the next generation of industry entrepreneurs. Located in Cheetham Hill, the non-profit, co-working and community space allows access to machinery, garment-making equipment and mentoring.
Caroline Herz and Georgina Housley, two former senior teachers at Manchester Metropolitan University, formed it with the intention of reviving “slow fashion” in the city, which has a long history of manufacturing and textiles.
In addition, an archive of designer items, including a unique Paco Rabanne chainmail garment and Victoria Beckham tailoring, will be housed in the room thanks to a donation from the employment charity Smart Works Greater Manchester.
Herz said, “Ultimately, we want to carve out a space for slow-made collections in today’s fashion industry and encourage production businesses to return to Manchester, especially given the city’s rich history.”
