Different labour bodies in Bangladesh have called upon the Government to bring the garment workers under purview of COVID-19 vaccination programme on a priority basis.
Reports maintained this adding the labour rights groups made this demand considering the fact that despite the recent surge of coronavirus cases in the country, which has led the Government to impose countrywide lockdown, garment workers are working in the factories to produce clothes even as some labour leaders have, reportedly, alleged that the workers were at high risk of getting infected as many factories were not strictly implementing health safety guidelines.
In a joint statement issued, Salahuddin Sopon and Papia Akter, the President and General Secretary of Bangladesh Revolutionary Garments Workers Federation (BRGWF) called for immediately vaccinating all the apparel workers on priority while underlining it was not possible to implement strict lockdown while allowing garment factories to operate.
Meanwhile, in a separate statement, Bangladesh OSK Garments and Textile Workers Federation, also reiterated the demand for vaccinating the garment workers on priority while also underlining workers should not be terminated amidst the pandemic.
