Minister of State for Labor and Employment, Munnujan Sufian, has called upon garment factory owners to submit a revised, reasonable proposal in line with the current market conditions.
This is as per reports, which added she mentioned that the Ministry of Labor will present an acceptable wage proposal to the wage board.
Furthermore, she noted that they are considering implementing a rationing system for garment workers, a move that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has endorsed.
If both parties fail to reach an agreement during the wage board discussions, the Prime Minister will make the final decision.
The labour unrest within the country’s readymade garment (RMG) industry has hit the sector hard, reportedly resulting in the temporary closure of over 300-400 RMG production units across the nation, apart from multiple fatalities, and hundreds of injuries in the continuing workers’ protest.
The turmoil began on 22nd October, following the presentation of minimum wage proposals for RMG workers by both the owners and workers’ representatives at the Minimum Wages Board.
The agitation began in Gazipur and subsequently spread to other significant RMG manufacturing hubs in the country, including Ashulia, Savar, Konabari, Mirpur, and more.
The situation took a turn for the worse after two workers lost their lives in Gazipur, and the unrest escalated into violence.
