In connection with the fifth anniversary of the closure of the Vijayamohini Mills in Thirumala, the Joint Trade Union has launched a day-and-night agitation called “Save NTC” in front of the facility.
Reopening the mill, paying outstanding pay arrears, guaranteeing ESI and PF coverage, giving working capital to mills under the National Textile Corporation, and prompt action by the Union Ministry of Textiles to address workers’ demands are just a few of the demands made by the agitation.
The strike was officially launched on Saturday by S Pushpalatha, the vice president of the CITU state. Johny Jose, the vice president of INTUC state, presided over the meeting, and Jyothish Kumar, from the Mazdoor Sangh district, gave the keynote speech.
The agitation was addressed by leaders of various trade unions and political parties. K Muraleedharan, a senior Congress leader, will speak to the employees on Sunday at the farewell event.
In a previous letter, CITU head M T Antony urged MP A A Rahim to address the concerns of textile workers in Parliament and the Union Ministry of Textiles. NTC should receive immediate financial support to satisfy its obligations. According to him, a suitable plan for its revitalisation and reorganisation should also be made public.
