State Government of Karnataka and Asian Research and Training Institute for Skill Transfer (ARTIST) have joined forces to provide relief to more than 2 lakh women employees in the garment sector suffering from anaemia.
Dr. Hema Divakar, Chairperson, ARTIST, who is also a FOGSI representative at FIGO (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics) said, “Though the problem of iron deficiency anaemia appears simple, it is widely prevalent in over 60 to 69 per cent women employed in the industrial sector. Unfortunately, women do not realise that they are anaemic. We have to tackle this issue with sincere efforts. If we administer iron to lady workers in garment factories, for the next 10 years at least, they will not suffer from anaemic conditions. We intend to roll out this programme in March.”

Under the project, women workers would be screened for anaemia by ESI Hospitals over the next four months. The Institute will install its ‘point of care’ equipment at screening centres to collect the data fetched through health check-ups and tests.
Reports claim that Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are also expected to launch similar projects in the second half of the year to eliminate Anaemia among the working women.
