A top official of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), who visited Bangladesh recently, has expressed happiness over measures taken by garment factories in the country to embrace green practices like saving water, energy and conserving the environment.
“The future of Bangladesh’s apparel industry is very bright because of the good workers and the vibrant private sector entrepreneurs,” said Mitsuhiro Furusawa, Deputy Managing Director of IMF. After visiting two green factories owned by Viyellatex Group, a leading garment manufacturer based in Gazipur, he suggested that Bangladesh however needs to improve infrastructure further to stay competitive.
“The atmosphere is excellent for the workers. I am very much impressed and ready to offer support to the private sector of Bangladesh,” Furusawa added.

It may be mentioned here that some 67 garment factories of Bangladesh have obtained a highly regarded global certification – the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) of the US Green Building Council. Another 222 factories have registered to obtain the recognition, according to Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).
