The International Labour Organisation (ILO) seeks to form an insurance scheme involving the buyers, employers and the Government, where all parties concerned will deposit certain amount as insurance even as it officially proposed the apex garment makers’ body, the Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), regarding an employment injury insurance scheme in the readymade garment sector of the country.
According to reports, which cited a press note issued by the garment makers’ body in this direction, led by the ILO Country Director Tuomo Poutiainen, ILO’s Bangladesh representatives on 23 May (Sunday) called on the new board of BGMEA where they discussed the insurance scheme.
We have to check how much the workers will benefit from the insurance scheme, reportedly, maintained the newly elected BGMEA President Faruque Hassan on the ILO proposal while adding that pilot project can be a good place to start.
If the pilot project is successful, we will implement the scheme, reportedly, stated Faruque.
The ILO delegation also, reportedly, praised the development that the Bangladesh apparel sector has made in the areas of social compliance and workplace safety while also deliberating on the progress of the ongoing projects jointly implemented by ILO and the BGMEA.
