Experts and speakers at a virtual seminar organised on 23 May (Sunday) called upon the garment makers in Bangladesh to adopt the concept of SEEWG or Small Energy Efficiency Working Group, so as to reduce energy costs, attain competitiveness and become more efficient.
Faruque Hasan, the President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA); the head of Component Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (4E) Project, GIZ Vietnam, Markus Bissel; Habibur Rahman, who is the Power Secretary; Chairman of SREDA (Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority) Mohammad Alauddin; and University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) professor Ijaz Hossain participated in the discussion.
In the keynote presentation on the issue, senior advisor of REEEP II, GIZ Bangladesh, Shafiqul Alam, reportedly, maintained that the concept of SEEWG is a top-level small working group combining officials from technical, procurement, finance, planning and management disciplines while underlining that this group, under a coordinator, will conduct energy audits, take measures and perform economic analysis at various points in time so as to evaluate the industry’s performance, for improving energy efficiency and conservation.
This, in turn, leads to making industry more efficient and competitive, Shafiqul maintained even as he cited case studies to claim that a number of companies in Bangladesh’s garment and textile sector have reduced their energy cost by up to 12 per cent by following this concept.
