Swedish fashion retailer H&M announced plans to phase out the use of virgin down and feathers by the end of 2025. These materials, sourced from ducks and geese, are commonly used in products like puffer jackets and pillows.
H&M aims to transition to using only post-consumer recycled down and feathers. Currently, around 90 per cent of the down and feathers in its products are recycled from used items.
This move aligns with longstanding animal welfare campaigns by organisations such as PETA, which has urged fashion brands to eliminate the use of animal-derived materials like down and leather. Earlier this year, PETA activists protested against H&M’s use of down at the company’s annual shareholders’ meeting.
