Workers from Self Innovation Fashion Limited blocked a section of the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Gazipur on Sunday night, demanding the payment of two months’ overdue salaries. The protest, which began around 9:15 PM in the Hariken area of Gacha Thana, resulted in significant traffic congestion on both sides of the highway, causing delays for numerous passengers and drivers.
Industrial Police Sub-Inspector Ismail Hossain reported that the workers expressed frustration over not receiving their wages for the past two months, despite multiple appeals to factory management for resolution.
In response to the situation, industrial police and local administration officials arrived at the scene to engage in discussions with the protesting workers. Ziaur Kabir Khokon, president of the Gazipur Garment Workers Trade Union Centre, emphasized the urgency of the matter, stating, “Several hundred workers from a ready-made garment factory in the Hariken area took to the streets demanding payment of outstanding salaries. I believe arrangements should be made to pay the salaries as soon as possible.”
The protest highlights ongoing issues within the garment industry regarding timely wage disbursement, raising concerns about the livelihoods of workers in the sector.
