The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has appealed to its member factories nationwide to shut down operations on 5th August, in observance of “July Mass Uprising Day.” The move aims to demonstrate solidarity with the Government’s declaration of a public holiday and to pay tribute to the martyrs of the uprising.
In a statement issued by the trade body, BGMEA emphasised that the decision was made to honor the significance of the day and to support the Government’s efforts to commemorate the event. The association described the closure as a “special request” to its members, noting that while the holiday is not mandated by law under existing labor regulations, its observance holds symbolic importance.
The garment industry, a key sector of Bangladesh’s economy, has traditionally shown respect for national commemorations, and the BGMEA’s call reflects its intent to uphold the memory of those who sacrificed their lives during the uprising.
