The noted economists and rights activists in Bangladesh have called for increasing the wage of the garment workers even as they demanded Bangladesh Government should form a wage board immediately for garment workers and ensure a minimum wage of Taka 25,000, considering the cost of living in the country.
This is as per media reports which claimed they made this demand while participating at a roundtable in Dhaka recently.
The roundtable discussion was organised by the Garment Workers Trade Union Centre even while addressing the event, noted economist Prof Anu Muhammad reportedly criticised the Government’s use of the term ‘adjustment’, which he claims was imported from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) even as he reportedly asked how can the garment workers survive on Taka 8,000 while also questioning if a four-member family can survive with this amount.
“What about their education, treatment, and other living expenses?” reportedly asked Prof Anu Muhammad even as the President of the Bangladesh Textile Garments Workers Federation Mahbubur Rahman Ismail reportedly held officials from the Ministry of Labour responsible for not forming a wage board for the apparel workers.
