Expressing deep sadness at the loss of lives following the recent fire incident at BM Container Depot in Sitakunda in Chittagong, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) has highlighted the need and importance of effective industrial and enterprise safety framework; vigilant enforcement; and a training system to ensure a structured approach to “mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery” to all hazards.
In a statement issued, the ILO maintained the fire incident at the BM Container Depot illustrated the urgent need to ensure proper handling and storage of chemicals, effective crowd control during an emergency incident and proper training for storage facility staff at awareness and operational levels.
The ILO further, reportedly, added, going forward, multiple actions were required across various areas, including a review of regulations and enforcement in the transport and logistics sector, while also calling for adequate compensation and income support to the injured and disabled workers and the families of those who die in work-related accidents.
