
Central fund, used for garment workers’ welfare and which since its formation provided around Taka 125.21 crore to about 9,500 workers and their families, has provided over Taka18.07 crore in the last six months to apparel workers for treating ‘incurable diseases’, injuries and providing higher education to their children.
Media reports maintained this citing the concerned officials.
As per Selina Akhter, who is the Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Employment and Director General of the Central Fund, the amount was given to workers of export-oriented garments industry, while the funds were also disbursed to assist the families of 1,528 workers who died in the last six months, i.e., between July and December 2021.
For information, the central fund was set up in 2015 under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, keeping with the provisions of Section 232 (3) of the Bangladesh Labour Act, 2006.
