Billabong has revealed its most environmentally sustainable wetsuit range yet, launching the ‘Upcycler’ collection.
The Upcycler collection incorporates redundant post-consumer textiles from jerseys; converting them into raw materials used for making internal rubber.
Furthermore, Billabong has shifted from synthetic to natural rubber, obtaining FSC-certified rubber from the Hevea brasiliensis tree. These initiatives together set up Upcycler wetsuits as the most sustainable option present in the market.
Scott Boot, global director of wetsuits at Liberated Brands, Billabong’s main operating partner in North America, highlighted their pledge to designing, constructing, and expanding the duration of their products as much as possible.
He shared, “Even as products ultimately reach the end of their lifecycle, novel solutions such as recycling old clothing reduces the need for new petroleum-derived materials and stop them from ending up in landfills.”
Billabong’s partnership with Bolder Industries, based in Boulder, Colorado, comprises processing old neoprene to take out a recycled form of carbon black known as Bolder Black, considerably reducing environmental impact.
