The Indonesian Government has declared its intention to execute two protective measures, specifically the Safeguard Measures Import Duty (BMTP) and the Anti-Dumping Import Duty (BMAD), intended at protecting the domestic textile industry from a rush in imported textiles.
The BMTP serves as a tariff forced by the state to ease the risk of considerable losses faced by the local industry due to a big increase in imported goods that openly compete with domestic products. For now, the BMAD will enforce an added import duty on such goods.
Finance Minister Mulyani Indrawati revealed that these measures are intended to protect Indonesia’s textile industry against the incursion of imported goods.
Subsequent to a cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, the Minister shared that the regulations will be issued in partnership with the Ministry of Trade and the Ministry of Industry.
Minister of Trade Zulkifli Hasan, talking at the same event, shared that President Joko Widodo had approved the execution of these policies to safeguard local industries.
As per data from Indonesia Statistics, the import price of clothing and accessories showcased a rising trend in the first quarter of the existing year. Imports summed up US $ 12.26 million in January, increased to US $ 20.87 million the subsequent month, and further rising to US $ 23.98 million in March.
