Anwar Hossain, the head of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), has underscored the importance of fair pricing in fostering sustainability within the garment sector. He emphasised that pricing policies have a direct impact on worker welfare, particularly given the rising production costs influenced by various domestic and international factors.
During a meeting with a delegation from the Worker Rights Consortium (WRC) at the BGMEA headquarters on Monday, Hossain noted that the prices offered by buyers often do not align with the current realities faced by producers. He urged WRC leaders to advocate for brands and buyers to adopt fair pricing practices.
The WRC delegation included Thulsi Narayanasamy, Director of International Advocacy; Manodeep Guha, Regional Director for South Asia; and Shaikat Mollik, WRC representative in Bangladesh.
In the meeting, Hossain provided an overview of the current landscape of the garment industry in Bangladesh, discussing both its challenges and opportunities. He also highlighted the significant strides the industry has made in recent years regarding workplace safety, labor standards, and environmental sustainability.
