The largest cotton sustainability initiative in the world, Better Cotton, has joined the Policy Hub, a coalition based in Brussels, to participate in important EU policy debates.
In order to influence and align on important EU policies like the Empowering Consumers and Green Claims Directives, the Omnibus proposal, and the Eco-design for Sustainable Products Regulation, the Policy Hub was established in 2019 and encourages technical discussions on new regulations. It also brings its network together to create cooperative, consensus-based positions.
In the midst of the current deregulation trend, the Policy Hub is an excellent platform for industry stakeholders to unite and maintain the momentum of all the efforts being made to propel the sector towards sustainability, according to Hélène Bohyn, Policy & Advocacy Manager at Better Cotton.
By contributing its viewpoint on farm-level reality, Better Cotton will help the coalition raise awareness of cotton and the importance of standards in assisting the textile industry’s shift to sustainability and circularity.
The Policy Hub’s co-directors, Marina Prados Espínola and Antoine Demarche, stated that the organisation is excited to begin a new phase of cooperation with Better Cotton, whose extensive knowledge of farming methods and the realities of farms on the ground will support policy initiatives at the European level.
In addition to promoting the environmental and social sustainability qualities of cotton as a natural fibre, Better Cotton hopes to support the representation of the wider range of the textile supply chain by contributing context-specific realities to the table of EU policy discussions.
Better Cotton will collaborate with Textile Exchange, Fashion for Good, the Organic Cotton Accelerator, the Social and Labour Convergence Program, and the Fair Labour Association as a member of the Policy Hub’s Advisory Group.
