Several garment firms from across Bangladesh were recently honoured by the Government for consistently maintaining exceptional health and safety standards.
The awards were handed over by Tipu Munshi, Commerce Minister of Bangladesh, and Munnujan Sufian, State Minister for Labour and Employment at the Krishibid Institute Bangladesh in the capital city of Dhaka.
Plummy Fashions, Fatullah Apparels, Comfit Composite Knit, Layla Styles, Wisdom Attires, Nafisa Apparels, Mother Colour, Epyllion Style Limited, Ecofab, Ananta Garments Limited and Crown Wears were the firms that received the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) awards.
Zaber & Zubair Fabrics, Wahab Jute Mills, Maf Shoes Ltd. were among others who were also honoured at the event. Companies from other sectors were also awarded for their contribution to maintaining safety standards.
The awards hold immense significance considering that today around 2.78 million workers die every year across the globe majorly from occupational accidents and work-related diseases, as per International Labour Organisation (ILO). This makes the efforts of the aforementioned companies all the more worthwhile.
28 April is every year recognised in Bangladesh as National OSH Day under the guidance of ILO’s garment programme that was launched in 2013 to enhance the working conditions in Bangladesh’s garment factories.
Tuomo Poutiainen, Country Director, ILO Bangladesh, applauded the efforts of the Bangladesh Government and other agencies for their commitment to develop a workplace safety culture in the country.
