After a period of unrest, the wage board responsible for determining garment workers’ salaries in Bangladesh is poised to unveil a new pay structure today, 7th November 2023.
RMG workers have been engaged in protests for over 11 days, calling for a minimum wage of Taka 23,000.
During a press briefing on last Thursday, State Minister for the Labour and Employment Ministry, Begum Monnujan Sufian, announced that the new salary structure would be disclosed during the sixth round of the wage board meeting, scheduled for today.
She also mentioned the potential introduction of ration cards for workers, enabling them to purchase essential goods at reduced prices.
Notably, the exact salary amount proposed by the ministry remains undisclosed, as reported by media.
Md Siddiqur Rahman, the owners’ representative on the board, mentioned that family cards would initially be provided to workers alongside the increased salary.
Subsequently, ration cards will be distributed to enable the purchase of essentials at more affordable rates.
