The International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) convention 138 on minimum age is all set to be ratified by Bangladesh by this month itself, setting 14 years as minimum under which no one will be admitted to employment or work in any occupation even if ratifying the convention was one of the actions on labour rights suggested by the European Union to sustain the existing generalised scheme of preferences (GSP) in the European market.
Media reports maintained this citing concerned senior Government officials, according to whom a ratification letter has been prepared and submitted to the ILO for its registration even if the Government officials said that the ratification of the convention would bring a positive development in eliminating child labour from the country.
Bangladesh has, reportedly, committed to eradicate all forms of child labour by 2025.
