Known for its worker welfare initiatives, Coimbatore-based leading textile conglomerate KPR Mills once again gave a good push to its young female workers.
22 young women workers of the company will soon start a fresh career at insurance and mobile phone manufacturing companies.
These workers had been pursuing school and college education for last few years at the in-house education facility even as they worked at the mill and apparel factories of the company.
As per a report published in leading English daily The Hindu, this year, KPR Mills organised placement camps and 22 of its candidates, who have completed graduation or post-graduation courses, were placed at two companies namely Tata Electronics and Ensuranze.
There are few workers in the company who continued with their studies and even completed higher education with the help of the company– and all this while working.
They used to work for eight hours and then attend classes for two hours every day. On Sundays, they had classes from morning to evening. They also learnt new skills that had nothing to do with the textile or apparel industry.
K. Somasundaram, Vice President of KPR Mills says, “Our Chairman has asked us to target campus placement for 1,000 workers a year in different sectors. Hence, we have launched training programmes for workers who are in the final year courses. As many as 53 workers are undergoing 45-day soft skill training. With this, the workers will be able to get skilled jobs in the corporate sector and will have a new career.”
Having started the education programme for five to 10 workers in 1998, the mill now has 3,000 of its 22,000 workers studying in school or doing higher education courses.
Nearly 40 per cent of the workers are from other states and last year, the mill launched education courses for them too.
