Japan-based Teijin Frontier Co. Ltd., the Teijin Group’s fibre-product converting company, has developed MINOTECH, a highly water-repellent outerwear material for Spring/Summer 2017.
The company explained that the material’s micro-garter structure, tiny convex bulges reduce horizontal surface tension to enable raindrops to slip smoothly off the surface in a vertical direction. The material is water-repellent (Grade 4), as well as durable (Grade 3) and is said to be pressure resistant (over 300 mm) and sustain its properties after 30 washes.
MINOTECH also have high moisture permeability due to its non-laminated structure that allows sweat vapour to escape, keeping the inner surface dry and pleasant to touch. The development of MINOTECH was inspired by the design of straw raincoats made in ancient Japan.

Samples of MINOTECH will be exhibited in 9th Teijin Frontier’s General Exhibition for 2017 Autumn/Winter, Spirit of FRONTIER, on 17th-18th November at TEPIA in Kitaaoyama, Tokyo.
The company projects its annual sales to rise to US $ 20 million in the fiscal year ending in March 2019 as a result of this recent development, by mainly targeting on Japanese and Chinese markets.
