
South Indian state of Karnataka is all set to house a mega silk cluster under the revised National Handloom Development Programme. The Karnataka State Textile Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (KSTIDCL) has been appointed as the cluster management and technical agency for the project.
The upcoming silk cluster has been proposed to be named as the Mysore Sri Chamundeshwari Mega Silk Cluster. It will be set up on ten acres of land at Belavadi village of Karnataka with an estimated cost of Rs. 50 crore.
“Union Government would bear 60 per cent of the total cost while the State Government would bear 30 per cent and remaining 10 per cent would be borne by the entrepreneurs. The cluster would enable the weavers to produce quality silk saris in an abundant quantity,” KSTIDCL Chairman G Thippesh said.

The proposed silk cluster is expected to create huge employment opportunities for the people of the state besides fuelling local economy by spanning ancillary industries. It is may be mentioned here that Mysuru and its surrounding regions are known for sericulture, and the famed Mysore Silk has been accorded the Geographic Indication tag in view of its uniqueness.
