Whenever we think about activewear, the fabric attributes that come into our minds are soft, smooth, stretchable and strong. But what if you get to know that the leggings and sports bra you are wearing is made from coconut husk? Surprising! Isn’t it? Fabrics for activewear are particularly problematic, as they need to be able to take whatever the wearer does and continue to give comfort to the wearer, the most recent answer lies with Cocona Fabric. Created from recycled coconut shells, the yarns and fibres are said to have the activated carbon taken from the shells.
The resulting coconut fabric has a number of properties that are beneficial to sportswear designers. For instance, Cocona textiles are fast drying (92% faster than cotton), which means the wearer spends less time in wet clothes. This feature also helps to wick away sweat; and odour is reduced by absorption through the fabric’s pores. Cocona is highly durable, lasting longer than other organic options such as bamboo and cotton; it also provides sun protection and is wrinkle-resistant.
