The Tamil Nadu Textile Merchants Association has requested that Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal step in to shield 10 crore small merchants from the damaging effects of e-commerce platforms’ exploitative pricing.
The association’s secretary, Ashraf Tayub, has praised the minister’s comments regarding the negative consequences of some e-commerce platforms’ aggressive pricing practices. The association functionary expressed real concern that these practices would force the closure of 10 crore small businesses and result in the loss of 40 crore jobs.
The difficulties encountered by small traders, the backbone of India’s retail sector, have received much-needed attention thanks to the Commerce Minister’s recent speech, he claimed.
He advised protecting small traders since doing so will protect the livelihoods of 40 crore workers who depend on small and medium-sized businesses for employment.
Citing this, he demanded that the Commerce Ministry create regulations to stop e-commerce platforms’ exploitative pricing practices and take prompt, decisive action to implement these recommendations.
In addition, he said, it will ensure that local companies are not forced out of the market, prevent significant job losses, and support the thriving network of small traders throughout India.
