Aquafil, the Italy-based carpet maker and nylon recycler, has partnered with Speedo USA upcycle Speedo’s post manufacturing swimwear scraps into Aquafil’s 100 per cent regenerated Econyl nylon.
Under this program, fabric scraps will be turned back into raw nylon fibre and eventually new swimsuits instead of ending up in landfills, the companies say.
Speedo’s new PowerFlex Eco swimwear fabric is made from Econyl which is endlessly recyclable, according to Aquafil. Giulio Bonazzi, Chairman and CEO of Aquafil shared, “We are challenging apparel manufacturers to be more sustainable and restructure their supply chains to divert waste from landfill.”
Postproduction swimwear fabric waste has not been suitable for traditional recycling due to its complex technical composition. However, Aquafil claims to have developed a technology that can turn swimwear fabric and other blended waste materials into new raw nylon.
