Ben Smith, the former Chief Trading Officer of Matalan, has been named as the Clothing Managing Director at Sainsbury’s to oversee Tu.
Smith began working for Matalan in March 2023 as the Interim Buying and Merchandising Director. Two months later, he was named Chief Trading Officer. Prior to his resignation in January, he oversaw the company’s transformation and Commercial Strategies for Clothing and Home, which generated over US $ 1.3 billion in revenue. Additionally, he has held positions as Trading Director at Primark and Pep&Co, both British shops.
The ‘largest ever’ Christmas was announced by Sainsbury’s back in January. Sales of apparel and general products rose 3.4 per cent, indicating notable enhancements in availability and selection.
As a result, the business informed shareholders that it was on pace to reach its profit expectations for the year, with retail underlying operating profits expected to fall between US $ 1.31 billion and US $ 1.37 billion.
George at Asda, who recently partnered with Erica Davies and Kat Farmer, respectively, will compete against Sainsbury’s Tu. It debuted its first bridesmaid collection online earlier this month.
