American department store chain, Macy’s preparations to deal with the holiday rush seems to have finally fructified as the apparel retailer has reported a respectable shopping season in the past year.
As per the press release issued by the company, Macy’s witnessed a 1 per cent increase in its comparable sales during the months of November and December 2017. It recruited around 87,000 more seasonal workers to manage the rush at its stores during the holiday season and Christmas.
The retailer also reported that comparable sales on an owned- and licensed-basis noted a 1.1 per cent rise during the period under review. Activewear, shoes, dresses, coats, fine jewellery, men’s tailored clothing, kidswear and home furnishings were key contributors to the Macy’s growth story.
Macy’s is hopeful that positive comparable sales during the holiday period would help it note a positive fourth quarter. The holiday season sales also helped Macy’s to note a double-digit growth in its digital business as well.
The fashion retail brand is focusing on maintaining strong growth on online platforms, stabilise its offline stores and set the foundation for growth in 2018, it said the press release. Further, the company intends to close around 19 more stores.
