Mango, a Spanish clothing retailer with around 2,800 locations worldwide, has announced that its founder and owner, Isak Andic, perished in a mountain accident.
The 71-year-old businessman was trekking with family members in the Montserrat caverns near Barcelona when he slipped and fell more than 100 meters (328 feet) over a cliff, according to a police spokesperson.
“We regret to inform you of the untimely passing of Isak Andic, our non-executive chairman and Mango’s founder,” Toni Ruiz, CEO of the Barcelona-based company, said in a statement.
“We have all looked up to Isak as an example. He devoted his life to Mango, making a lasting impression via his outstanding leadership, strategic vision, and uncompromising adherence to the ideals he instilled in our business,” he continued.
Andic, who was born in Istanbul, Turkey, relocated to Catalonia, in northeastern Spain, with his family in the 1960s. In 1984, he established Mango. With a substantial presence in over 120 markets and 15,500 workers globally, the company has solidified its position as one of the top global fashion groups.
