The European Commission has formally requested that fast-fashion giant Shein to provide detailed information about its product recommendation system and the measures it has in place to protect user data and mitigate risks associated with potentially illegal product sales. This request requires Shein to hand over internal documents and comprehensive details about how its algorithms suggest products to users.
Beyond the recommender system, the Commission is also seeking information on Shein’s approach to consumer protection, including how it safeguards user data and addresses risks to public health and user well-being. Shein has until 27th February to comply with this request. Failure to do so could lead to a formal investigation and potential legal proceedings.
This demand for transparency comes amidst increasing scrutiny of online marketplaces and their impact on consumers. The EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), which came into full effect recently, requires large online platforms to be more transparent and accountable for the content they host and the algorithms they use.
