As part of its push into the luxury sector, eBay has started to authenticate streetwear. According to a press statement, the online marketplace’s authentication programme will feature streetwear in addition to sneakers, watches, jewellery, handbags and trading cards.
“eBay has pieces from nearly every notable streetwear drop that’s ever happened — whether in 1993 or 2023,” said Garry Thaniel, eBay’s global general manager of sneakers and streetwear, in the release.
According to the press release, eBay will authenticate streetwear purchased and sold in the United States for items costing more than US $ 200. Each item will be examined by the company’s qualified authentication team.
Aimé Leon Dore, Bape, Fear of God, Kith, Off-White, Palace, Stone Island, Supreme, and Vetements are among the brands that will debut on the programme. By the end of September, the company intends to include labels including Adidas, Balenciaga, Burberry, Dior, Gucci, Prada, and Nike.
The launch comes a few weeks after eBay bought authentication company Certilogo, along with a platform that allows customers to confirm the authenticity of their clothing.
The Certified by Brand programme, which eBay just introduced, aims to provide customers with a greater selection of sought-after and valuable luxury goods while also guaranteeing authenticity through eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee.
High-end brands’ products will be available on eBay as newly released, certified pre-owned, limited-edition, or exclusive “only on eBay” stock.
According to the company’s earnings report from April, the luxury market is gaining pace, with double-digit annual growth since the fourth quarter of 2019.
