Burberry plans to use the purchase of an Italian apparel producer to fortify its supply chain. The technical outerwear factory was purchased by the British luxury brand from Pattern SpA, a longtime supplier whose business activities include engineering and producing high-end clothing.
As reported by WWD, Burberry purchased the business for € 21 million in order to ensure production capacity and expand its ability to produce technical outerwear. Burberry currently manufactures its iconic waterproof gabardine trench coats in Castleford and Keighley, in Yorkshire, England.
In order to create luxury ready-to-wear, including quilts and downs, Burberry said that it collaborated with Pattern for 20 years at the company’s product development facility in Turin, Italy. Burberry claimed that the acquisition would enhance its domestic production capabilities and further integrate sustainability into its value chain.
Around 70 staff from Pattern in Turin will join Burberry once the transaction is finalised, which is anticipated to happen later this year. The elements of the business not covered by the deal will continue to be run by Pattern.
Jonathan Akeroyd, CEO, commented, “This strategic investment is an important next step in bringing our outerwear category to full potential. It will enhance our capabilities, building on our strong foundations in the UK, and provide greater control over the quality, delivery and sustainability of our products. It’s an exciting development and I am delighted to welcome our new colleagues on board.”
