Brand Machine Group (BMG), which recently added a men’s buying head to the company, has further demonstrated the priority it attaches to growing its menswear operations with the announcement that it has bought the Peckham Rye brand.
The venerable tailor, which was established in the London neighbourhood after which it was named in 1795, has been acquired by the corporation, which operates licensed labels in addition to owning a number of trademarks.
The business, which also houses the brands Penfield and US Polo Assn., was behind the recent revival of the upscale menswear line Duchamp.
BMG will display a pre-collection that ‘combines classicism with modern-day British preppiness, sartorial elegance with contemporary touches for today’s urban gentleman’ for Peckham Rye which will be offered in May.
“For a brand founded over two centuries ago by 14-year-old Tommy McCarthy, who began making army uniforms and was very much self-taught, there is a strong sense of old-school south London cockiness to the new range – in the best possible way. If Tommy were around today, he’d be wearing these pieces around town himself,” said the brand.
